Blending | Is it an art or a science?

At home

Ever wondered what goes into blending our Sauvignon Blanc?  It’s all happening right now!

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most identifiable styles in the world. But how do we make it and what are we ultimately aiming for?  Luckily for us we have plenty to work with in the vineyard.  You could refer to it as ‘precision viticulture’ from different blocks within the vineyard, different micro-climates, different soil types, vine age differs, there’s differing pruning regimes and there’s always different pick dates.  So what results is many cuvees (or several tanks all with their own ‘personality’) from which Eveline can ‘build’ up the blend.  Ultimately aiming for complexity, concentration, layers, weight and persistence.  And importantly, drinkability.

We firmly believe that ‘great Sauvignon Blanc is made in the vineyard ‘- and ours has the necessary attributes for brilliance.
As Eveline says, “…To me, good wine reflects the vineyard and soils it comes from and it must have a clear sense of ‘self’, style and individuality.”
Blending is an art as much as a science and her knowledge of what she wants Little Beauty to be each year and understanding what the vineyard gives her is the work of a true artisan – trust us, it’s as hard as it sounds!
